Ukraine Donations (local support)

Posted by Brian Kauk
· Monday, April 11th, 2022

UPDATE

Ukrainian Diaspora Support Canada (formerly Ukraine Support Lanark County) is a non-profit initiative led by Zack Netherly and Mary Mokrushyna that seeks to bring families and individuals fleeing the war in Ukraine to our area. St James’ and other local churches are directly involved in supporting Zack and Mary in their work, which we consider to be God’s work. They are organizing to provide billeted housing, medical, legal and psychological supports and to make sure people feel welcome here as long as they need to stay. Visit their website for more information.

The main need right now is for financial contributions to help cover airfare. We are asking donors to make contribution directly to UADSC at this time rather than contributing through us or any other charity. Visit their website for more information.

Donations for the week of April 4

Posted by Brian Kauk
· Sunday, April 3rd, 2022

Drop off times this week – Monday to Wednesday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Please call 613-257-3178 and press 9 to make alternate arrangements

This week’s wish list.

We’re looking for:

  • NEW Play-Doh
  • NEW small Lego kits ($8-$15)
  • Picture dictionaries
  • Adult colouring books
  • Adult craft kits

But for now:

  • NO clothing
  • NO toiletries
  • NO furniture or household items
  • NO cribs
  • NO baby swings

We’ll let you know when we’re ready for clothing and toiletries again. Meanwhile, if you have to donate them elsewhere because they’re taking up space (we can identify) then please find them a good home.

Next week is HOLY WEEK and we’ll be taking a break from donations. While we hit the pause button, we invite everyone to take some time for reflection. We consider love to be the most powerful force in the world, more powerful than violence and hate. Join us in a prayer (in whatever way you pray) that this war will end soon.

Introducing the UADSC Boutique

Posted by Brian Kauk
· Thursday, March 31st, 2022

Welcome to the Boutique, where our new friends can get what they need.

St James’ Carleton Place is working with Ukraine Diaspora Support Canada, assisting and supporting Ukrainians displaced by war. When they arrive to our area, they will have the opportunity to visit this shop where we stock quality and attractive clothing, toiletries and personal items. We have car seats, baby strollers and a few teddy bears that might need a good home.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of volunteers and the generosity of people from all over (Lanark, Ottawa and places across the region) this Boutique was created from scratch within a week! The Boutique has almost everything our new friends will need. Thank you to all who participated in the work God is doing in our community.

Like a consignment store, we will only be able to take some of the things people want to give us. We don’t have any more storage space, so we have to be choosy. Follow the weekly announcements in this space to find out specifically what we’re looking for from week to week. Advance notice – we will be closed for donations during Holy Week, and through Easter weekend (April 10-18). That’s our time to be holy, not busy.

You are invited to take a tour on Sunday after church. But look – don’t touch! We really, really, REALLY do not want to sort, fold and stack clothing any more than we have to.

Donations for the week of March 28

Drop off times this week – Monday to Wednesday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Please call 613-257-3178 and press 9 to make alternate arrangements

Thanks for holding off over the weekend. Believe it or not, we’re still sorting. We have some of everything we can think of, so the urgency is low. If you’re really keen on making a difference in this effort, remember that money moves easier than physical items.

We’re going to focus this week on babies. Here’s what we’re asking for this week:

We want:

  • baby strollers
  • car seats
  • crib sheets
  • sleep sacks
  • baby bath towels
  • changing pads
  • baby monitor
  • night lights
  • picture dictionaries
  • comic books
  • graphic novels
  • adult colouring books

For now, please hang onto:

  • no clothing
  • no toiletries
  • no furniture or household items
  • no cribs
  • no baby swings

We’ll let you know when we’re ready for clothing and toiletries again. Meanwhile, if you have to donate them elsewhere because they’re taking up space (we can identify) then please find them a good home.

Donations for Ukraine Support Lanark County

Last week was amazing!! Scroll through to the end of this post to see what it looks like so far.

We have toothbrushes – more than anyone could ever ask or imagine, and many other toiletry items. Our little tuck shop is well on it’s way to being fully stocked. And we have so many donations we still have to go through! But we know you still want to be a part of this amazing community effort. If you’re interested in donating, here’s what we know we’re missing:

  • clothing for boys and girls age 5-19, specifically:
    • socks
    • pyjamas
    • jeans
  • spring jackets (adults and children)
  • dental floss/picks
  • deodorant
  • Q-tips (smaller packs)
  • mouthwash (please check expiry dates)

Please do not drop off medications of any kind. Remember: we can’t give out partially used bottles, tubes or personal items that are not in their original packaging.

Please, please, please: no housewares, furniture or larger items. We may ask for those later on, but we don’t have anyone to pass them onto yet. If you have a good idea that we haven’t considered (like the woman who offered a baby stroller) please contact the church office. We can’t take everything, so please do not be disappointed if you arrive and he have to say “no, thanks!”

If you would like to contribute your time to the effort, click this link and fill out the form to let the organizers know how you can help. If you have the means, we still encourage financial donations large and small.

Ukraine Donations (local support)

Posted by Brian Kauk
· Tuesday, March 15th, 2022

Ukraine Support Lanark County is a grassroots initiative to bring families and individuals fleeing the war in Ukraine to our area. St James’ and other local churches are directly involved. We are organizing to provide billeted housing, medical, legal and psychological supports and to make sure people feel welcome here as long as they need to stay. A website is coming soon, and we’ll continue to pass on more information as it becomes available. Read about how St James’ Carleton Place is collecting donations in kind to support people as they arrive.

The main need right now is for cash to help cover airfare. Financial contributions are being coordinated by Carebridge Community Support. You can donate online by clicking the button below. Please be sure to follow the instructions. If you are more comfortable writing a check or giving cash on Sunday, please mark “Ukraine Support LC” in the memo field or on the envelope. We’ll pass those contributions along as quickly as we can.

In the “Write a private message to us (optional)” bar, type the word ‘Ukraine’. Any donation above $25 will get a charity receipt from Carebridge. If you don’t put Ukraine in the message, they won’t know it’s for this initiative… so it’s super SUPER important!

[ARCHIVED MARCH 25]

St James Carleton Place is currently accepting donations of clothing, toiletries, personal items and PPE on behalf of Ukraine Support Lanark County. You can drop items off at the Parish Hall located at

225 Edmund Street
Monday – Friday
9 am to 1 pm
5 pm to 7 pm (this week and March 21-25)

Please call 613-257-3178 to arrange a drop off time outside office hours.

Please no appliances or furniture. Imagine being on a long trip, and you loose your luggage. That’s more in line with what we’re looking for right now. These needs may change, so if you have other items you wish to contribute, hang onto them, or feel free to donate them somewhere else.

The other way you can help right now is by making a financial contribution.  Read more about how you can do that in this announcement.

Updated Feb 24, return to in-person worship

Posted by Brian Kauk
· Monday, February 7th, 2022

UPDATE, FEBRUARY 24 – This Sunday we will begin offering Holy Communion in both kinds across the Parish. We also found out this week that as of March 6, all parishes in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa have the option of allowing presiders, preachers, readers and intercessors to remove their masks when speaking (other than that, everyone must remain masked, except to take communion). We welcome hearing from people who may have concerns one way or the other. Please speak with a churchwarden or contact the clergy at 613-257-3178 x 21.

UPDATE, FEBRUARY 17 – This week’s COVID Communiqué from our Diocese stated that congregational singing is now allowed. Those attending services in the churches in our Parish should assume that others attending the service may be singing, and measure the risk accordingly.

ANNOUNCEMENT, FEBRUARY 13

The clergy team announces that the churches of the Area Parish of Mississippi Lake will come back to in-person worship on Sunday, February 13 according to the following schedule:

  • St James’ Carleton Place, 8:00 am and 10:00 am
  • St James’ Franktown, 9:00 am
  • Christ Church Ashton, 9:00 am
  • St John’s Innisville, 11:00 am
  • St Bede’s Nolan’s Corners, 11:00 am
  • Thursdays at 10:00 am, St James’ Carleton Place resume on February 17

For the time being, the parish office will be open for parishioners Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 1 pm. We please ask that you consider an email or a phone call instead of coming in person. Cathy is covering the phones during regular office hours, so call any day of the week.

It is more important than ever that anyone with COVID symptom should assume they have it and stay home.

When you come, you can expect something close to what we were doing before Christmas.

  • Seating capacity is limited, and physical distancing (except for members of the same household) must be maintained at all times.
  • Proof of vaccination will be required when you arrive (with the exception of Thursdays at St James’ Carleton Place).
  • Pre-registration will not be required.
  • Masks must be worn throughout the service, except when taking communion. The use of three-layer, medical, or N95 masks is encouraged.
  • No congregational singing is permitted. The choir, however, is allowed to sing UPDATED ON FEB 17
  • Social time is not permitted yet – people should leave church promptly.

Please feel free to contact us with questions, feedback and concerns about this decision, or any other aspect of our church’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
